Biographical details

Aly Abdelmagid is an architect, PhD in Architecture, and Associate Professor of Architectural Sciences and Technology at the École Nationale Supérieure d’Architecture de Paris-La Villette (ENSAPLV). He is also a member of the council of the Geometry, Structure, Architecture (GSA) Research Laboratory at ENSA Paris-Malaquais – PSL University.

His teaching and research activities lie at the intersection of architectural geometry, computational design, structural systems, and construction techniques. They explore the relationships between form, forces, materials, and fabrication, and their role in the architectural design process.

His research focuses particularly on the geometry and rationalization of complex surfaces and their materialization through simple, resource-efficient construction systems. It investigates materials such as bamboo, timber, and stone, combining geometric and computational methods, structural analysis, material experimentation, and the construction of full-scale prototypes. This approach seeks to reconcile geometric complexity with constructive simplicity and accessible fabrication techniques.

He has previously taught at ENSA Lille, ENSA Paris-Malaquais, and École Nationale des Ponts et Chaussées. His pedagogical approach integrates geometry, structure, materials, and construction, employing parametric modelling, numerical simulation, and experimentation as tools for architectural design and evaluation.

His work has resulted in scientific publications, presentations at international conferences, and experimental workshops, in collaboration with academic institutions and professional partners in France and internationally.
