Architectural theory
Learning objectives
This course, dedicated to the question of inhabitation, will look at both theoretical texts and architectural realizations, in order to examine the major themes of domestic architecture: the relationship between inside and outside, between private and public space, between house and garden, but also the places of communal life and the intimate places of the home. We’ll also take a look at the major paradigms that have developed according to a specific mode of organization: the house and the courtyard building, the pavilion and the villa, the linear building and the residential tower. The aim of this course is to engage students in a critical examination of architectural references from a variety of periods and cultures, in order to grasp the spatial, constructive and anthropological issues at stake in the design and construction of domestic architecture.
Content
Evaluation method
Assessment will take the form of an individual exercise carried out outside the class, as well as a course grade at the end of the semester.
Required work
The individual exercise will consist of a critical analysis of an architectural reference, compared with the collective housing exercise proposed as part of the Semester 3 project course.
