Introduction to the history of twentieth-century architecture: the spaces of modernity
Every Friday 10.45am – 12.45pm

The very first objective is to learn how to historicize architecture by contextualizing its forms, practices and designations. This is followed by a familiarization with twentieth-century theories, forms and practices, set in their historical contexts, and their transformation over time in line with changes in lifestyles and techniques.

This course examines architecture from three angles:
-as an expression of a moment in history and culture,
-as an action on society,
-as a process of stratification in perpetual transformation.

Targeted skills
-Mastery of specific vocabulary.
Acquire a base of knowledge and references on twentieth-century architecture, enabling architectural analysis and familiarization with various design approaches.
-Become aware of the historicity of works of art and the historical roots of tools, concepts and notions, so as to put into perspective the dominant narrative of today, built on the “new” and the “broken”.

Cet enseignement inscrit l’architecture dans un champ de connaissances vaste, incluant la société, l’art, et la science, en montrant que l’objet architectural est un fait culturel indissociable de son contexte historique, tout en se situant à la confluence des savoirs et des savoir-faire.

Les principaux courants et doctrines architecturaux du XXe siècle seront abordés à travers leur « conception de l’espace », une notion centrale dans l’enseignement du projet. Cette approche permet d’explorer l’histoire de l’architecture en tant que champ culturel mais aussi en lien avec les éléments architectoniques étudiés lors de l’initiation au projet.

Contrairement au premier semestre, ce cours met l’accent sur des figures majeures, des courants et des œuvres emblématiques. Il s’attache à replacer ces acteurs et leurs réalisations dans leur contexte historique et dans le temps long de leur trajectoire professionnelle, afin de mieux comprendre l’évolution du concept d’espace architectural—ses formes, ses significations et ses usages. Cette démarche vise à dépasser une lecture réductrice qui enfermerait ces figures dans un seul dogme ou une théorie unique, limitée à quelques œuvres iconiques.

PROGRAMME DES SEANCES (13 séances)
Des séances synchroniques dédiées à l’émergence d’une conception spatiale (par ex., l’espace ouvert) s’alternent avec des séances diachroniques qui mettent l’accent sur la transformation d’un thème dans le temps (par ex., l’architecture de la ville ou, architecture et technologie).

1. Continuous assessment via Carnet: 50%
Note-taking, one sheet on a) a building or project or, b) analysis of a text, manifest PER SESSION, explaining the architectural design linked to the session’s problematic with important contextual elements (See instructions file, submitted online)
2. Written exam: 50%
ATTENTION: The whole (50% exam and 50% notebook) will be taken into account for the final grade BUT to validate the continuous assessment your notebook must contain at least 7 building or project analyses and 3 text analyses.

The catch-up will take a similar form.

Notebook: take notes, one card on a building or project per session or a text, manifesto explaining the architectural design linked to the session’s problematic, at the end all these unrealized buildings or projects will be located on a timeline/chronological grid (in fold-out / leporello).
