sauerbruch hutton: Matter in resonance

Franklin Village, Mannheim, 2023 – © Jan Bitter
While the twentieth century was marked by the age of concrete, the beginning of the twenty-first is seeing the worldwide renaissance of an ancestral building material: wood. This natural material offers a different interpretation of modernity, combining functionality, adaptability, sincerity and beauty, with a remarkably low carbon footprint. At the same time, this renaissance raises cultural questions and revives deeply-rooted imaginations.
Based in Berlin and active internationally, sauerbruch hutton has been exploring the many facets of timber construction for over twenty years. In their projects, this living material is used as a façade element, as a load-bearing structure and in modular systems. With each architectural work, sauerbruch hutton redefines the technical and atmospheric potential of wood.
The “Matière en résonance” exhibition, featuring numerous models and a selection of photographs, presents sauerbruch hutton’s ongoing reflection on wood – a material that brings together innovation and tradition.
sauerbruch hutton is an international architecture, urban planning and design firm. Founded in London in 1989, it has been based in Berlin for over thirty years. With an experienced team of over 100 collaborators, the firm’s interdisciplinary approach is based on constant collaboration and dialogue.
She designs singular, sustainable projects capable of responding to a wide variety of challenges and issues. The pleasure of sensual use of space and materials, curiosity about technical and spatial innovation, and responsible use of existing resources of all kinds are at the heart of her architectural practice.
Opening on Tuesday, February 3, 6:30-9pm.
In conjunction with the exhibition, the Galerie d’Architecture is offering a lecture on Thursday, February 12, 2026 at 7pm, as well as several guided tours by the architects on Saturdays, February 7, 14 and 28, 2026 (no advance registration required).
