Architecture never exists in isolation. Its form is always perceived as part of a larger landscape, and conversely its interior spaces are in essence an extension of this external environment.
The conference by Japanese landscape architects Toru Mitani and Akihiko Ono will present the book “L+A: Ways toward Landscape + Architecture”, which explores this fundamental reality through the analysis of major architectural works of the 20th century, from the modern era to Postmodernism. For beyond the fashions of each era, every building is rooted in a soil, inscribed in a relief and in dialogue with its environment; it lives and breathes within this whole. The ground itself reveals more of its character through the presence of architecture. We refer to this interaction as
We hope that these exchanges will open up new perspectives by enriching the reading of architecture through its landscape, and of landscape through its architecture, thus fostering more attentive and respectful thinking about both.
The conference will also include presentations of current projects by the book’s authors, Toru Mitani and Akihiko Ono: Toru Mitani develops an approach to landscape in which the architectural vocabulary acts as a mirror of the environment. Akihiko Ono, for his part, is developing a singular design method for the preservation and revitalization of plant ecologies.
Their invitation was made possible thanks to funding from the European Union’s Erasmus+ program.
Conference in English open to all, organized by teacher Jonathan Bruter.
